Art and Design

Arts is the use of our internal skills to create beautiful things. It is a way humans can express their thoughts and mind using creative paintings, ceramic pieces or sculptural pieces.

In EYFS, children use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Children develop observational drawing skills and learn how to mix colours. Printing with everyday objects is explored as well as learning about the characteristics and colours of fabrics. Children are encouraged to be creative and imaginaitive in their learning by creating props to support their narratives, songs and imagintive play.

In Phase 1/2 pupils develop Drawing by exploring materials and tools for mark making, as well as  how mood and movement can be represented. In Painting mark making contiues to be developed using paint as media and building on from EYFS, they will learn how to mix secondary colours. Clay, card and natural materials are used to create 3 dimensional sculptures.

In Phase 3/4, learning builds on from previous Drawing skills in Phase 1/2 by developing contour drawings using still life and natural forms. Painting techniques of tonking, impasto and scraffito are secured as well as developing colour mixing skills of tertiary colours.  Children learn how to use a printing slab and roller as well as how to create different printing blocks and  explore the range of marks that can be made through Printing. Collage is developed through 3D and textiles by exploring line and shape with paper, overlapping and layering.  Children learn how to use wire as a media for creating 3D sculptures.

In Phase 5/6 Drawing and Painting are combined and conitiue to be developed from the previous phase by learning the technique of subtractive drawing and using organis lines to create landscapes. A range of drawing techniques are developed to create abstract images, focusing on surrealism and portraiture. In Printmaking, printing techniques are combined and the reduction method is developed. Textile and Collage skills are combined to create wall hangings using applique, weaving and braiding.  Shape, colour and form are explored in 3D through the media of clay and recycled materials.

Our art curriculum promotes and develops diversity through the study of  significant  artists who are Dutch, Italian, Mexican, and black American as well as artists with disabilities. Furthermore, our curriculum  prepares children  for study beyond KS2 by developing early concepts and skills which are studied at GCSE level: Fine Art, Textile Design, 3D design and Graphic Communication.
