PE Curriculum

PE at Bentley CEVC Primary School and Copdock Primary School plays a vital part of everyday school life. All pupils have two hours of PE timetabled each week to cover the six main areas of the National Curriculum which are dance, gymnastics, games, swimming, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities. During the Autumn and Spring term, children from Years 2 to Year 4 attend swimming lessons once a week. A healthy lifestyle is also promoted throughout the schools. Alongside the PE Curriculum the children have the opportunity to participate in numerous lunchtime activities everyday which is run by the Young Leaders and a range of after school sports clubs including tag rugby, golf, running, football, multi-sports, American sports, basketball, cricket and games. A selection of these are offered at different times throughout the school year.

At Bentley and Copdock, teaching of PE lessons aims to promote a healthy lifestyle as well as the development of skills and the opportunities to evaluate and improve their performance, in addition to develop enjoyment of sport, confidence and self-esteem.

Children are given the opportunity to participate in the local school primary pyramid festivals and competitions. On a regular basis school fixtures are arranged in many sports which enables the children to be proud to represent their school at a local and county level.

As a school we feel community sports links are essential and we therefore work closely with the local cricket and tennis club, Inspire Suffolk which is a local organisation that provides PE once a week alongside the class teacher to develop the teachers knowledge and understanding of a range of sports and an after school club, also we are part of the School Games. We liaise with the local School Games Organiser as well as our colleagues at East Bergholt High School.

Swimming

We current have swimming lessons for Y2, 3 and 4 for two terms each year. Lessons are held with First Strokes within the Oakland Nursery site on Hadleigh Road. At First Strokes the children are assessed against a number of stages in line with the national curriculum. Further information can be found here.

The vast majority of our children have reached the National Curriculum goal of swimming 25 metres and can demonstrate keen water safety techniques by the time they leave Year 4. Our aim is to extend their water skills in other ways through personal survival, opportunities to partake in galas and other water sports such as sailing.

PE and Sport Premium

In March 2013 the Government announced that all Primary Schools would be receiving a Sport Premium allocation for 2013 to 2015 which has now been extended. This funding is to be used for schools to provide, support and engage, develop and deliver sustainable high quality teaching in school physical education and sport. At Bentley CEVC Primary School and Copdock Primary School we aim to have a positive attitude towards a healthy and active lifestyle. We also provide regular training to enhance the needs and development of staff and provide High Quality PE. Further information on how we intend to use this premium is shown in the attached documents below.
